Silverstein disappointed by President’s call for Palestinian state President Obama calls on Israel to allow Palestinian state based on 1967 borders

SPRINGFIELD, IL Illinois State Senator Ira Silverstein (DChicago) expressed disappointment today after President Barack Obama announced his endorsement for the Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.

Senator Silverstein released the following comment after the president’s announcement:

"President Obama’s remarks are truly disheartening," Silverstein said. "When he and I served together in the State Senate, we had talked on several occasions about the Mideast conflict. I am not completely removed from the conflict because I live in Illinois. I have family, including a sister, who is experiencing the effects of this conflict every day in Israel. How can one negotiate with one party that is unwilling to exist? Moreover, the recent unity agreement between to main Palestinian factions, Fatah and Hamas, threatens Israel’s existence.

I have truly supported President Obama, including campaigning for him in Illinois, Ohio and other states. I have helped to spread his message of hope and change. I believe now the president will lose the support of Jewish voters across the nation."

Senator Silverstein echoes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks, "Israel believes that for peace to endure between Israelis and Palestinians, the viability of a Palestinian state cannot come at the expense of the viability of the one and only Jewish state." President Netanyahu also called on President Obama to hold true to commitments made by the United States to Israel in 2004 which included not having to withdraw the 1967 borders.
